FAQ
1 / What is Japanese permanent hair straightening?
Japanese permanent hair straightening is a chemical and thermal restructuring process originally developed in Japan. Unlike temporary smoothing treatments, it permanently alters the internal bonds of the hair to transform curly, wavy, or frizzy hair into a straight structure. The process uses specialised Japanese formulas combined with controlled heat to break and then reform the hair’s disulfide bonds in a new, straight configuration. Once treated, the straightened sections will remain straight permanently; only new hair growth will retain its natural texture. The method requires advanced technical knowledge, precise product selection, and careful timing to avoid damage. When performed correctly by an experienced specialist, Japanese straightening produces smooth, natural-looking, long-lasting results that behave like naturally straight hair.
2 / How is Japanese straightening different from keratin?
Japanese permanent hair straightening and keratin treatments serve completely different purposes. Japanese straightening is a structural change: it permanently restructures the hair’s internal bonds, resulting in hair that dries straight without styling. Keratin treatments, by contrast, are cosmetic surface coatings that temporarily smooth the hair by filling gaps in the cuticle with proteins and silicones. Keratin does not change the hair’s natural structure and typically fades after a few weeks or months. Japanese straightening requires heat tools and chemical neutralisation, while keratin treatments rely mainly on sealing products into the hair. The results, longevity, and technical complexity are not comparable. Japanese straightening is permanent and technical and the result is guaranteed; keratin is temporary and maintenance-based.
3 / Is Japanese straightening safe on coloured hair?
When performed by a highly experienced Japanese permanent hair straightening specialist, the treatment can be safely carried out on almost all hair types and colours, including coloured, bleached, highlighted, and chemically treated hair. Modern Japanese straightening systems have evolved significantly over the years and now include advanced protective and reparative products that preserve the hair’s integrity during the process. These systems allow the treatment to be customised precisely according to the hair’s condition, history, and strength, rather than applying a one-formula approach. Only hair that is extremely damaged beyond structural recovery may be unsuitable. With correct diagnosis, tailored formulas, controlled heat application, and in-process repair technology, Japanese straightening can deliver permanent, smooth results while maintaining hair health, even on previously compromised hair.
4 /How long after treatment can I wash my hair?
After Japanese permanent hair straightening, it is generally recommended to wait 48 hours before washing your hair. During this time, the newly restructured bonds are stabilising, and premature washing can interfere with the final result. The hair should remain dry, untied, and free from clips, elastic bands, or pressure that could create bends or marks. After the waiting period, you can wash and style your hair normally. Proper aftercare products, such as gentle shampoos and nourishing conditioners, will help maintain hair health and shine. Following post-treatment instructions carefully is crucial to achieving optimal, long-lasting results from Japanese straightening.
5 /What are the common mistakes stylists make?
One of the most common mistakes stylists make with Japanese straightening is using incorrect product strength without properly assessing hair condition. Overprocessing or underprocessing can both compromise results. Another frequent error is failing to account for previous chemical treatments, such as bleach or keratin, which can react unpredictably. Poor heat control during ironing can cause irreversible damage, while inadequate neutralisation can lead to weak or uneven results. Some stylists also treat Japanese straightening as a routine service rather than a highly technical procedure, skipping strand tests or consultations. Japanese straightening requires specialist training, experience, and precision; treating it like a standard smoothing treatment is one of the biggest causes of failure.
5 /Why modern Japanese straightening is different today?
Modern Japanese permanent hair straightening is significantly more advanced than early versions of the technique. Over the years, Japanese laboratories have refined both the chemical formulations and the supporting systems used during the process. Today’s treatments are designed to work with multiple hair profiles, including coloured, bleached, and chemically treated hair, while prioritising structural integrity. Advanced Japanese systems now incorporate bond-protecting agents, internal repair components, and moisture-balancing technology that actively protect the hair during chemical restructuring. In addition, improved thermal tools and precision application methods allow for greater control and consistency. As a result, modern Japanese straightening delivers permanent, natural-looking results with far greater safety, predictability, and hair condition preservation than was possible in the past, when performed by an experienced specialist.
